Mary Holding Child Jesus

On July 16, 1251, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is said to have appeared to the Carmelite St. Simon Stock and given him—as a symbol of God’s protection against evil unto eternal life—a brown scapular. In 1726, Pope Benedict XIII formally designated July 16 the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for the universal Catholic Church.

The first atomic bomb—blasphemously code-named Trinity—was detonated on July 16, 1945, the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
